In 2011, NICE (Nassau Inter County Express) took over from MTA Long Island Bus. Philosophically, I USUALLY SUPPORT Private over Public. Unfortunately, I think NICE BUS has made TOO MANY Mistakes & I think MTA Long Island Bus should take over Nassau & Suffolk County Transit.
NICE Bus Operates 3 Shuttle Routes, 2 of them used to be Bus Routes, & 1 New Shuttle Route. I would like to address these 3 Routes in this Blog.
The First Shuttle is the Mercy Medical Shuttle. This Shuttle USED to be the N17 Route. The N17 operated between the Hempstead Transit Center, which is located across the Street from the Hempstead LIRR Station, & the Rockville Centre LIRR Station. The N17 served Hempstead, Mercy Hospital & Rockville Centre. Currently, this Shuttle ONLY Operates on Weekdays during the Morning & Evening Rush.
This Shuttle Serves 2 Railroad Stations & a Hospital. I Propose making it 24/7 Shuttle Route. Of Course when there is Little Ridership, like the overnight, You can have it run every Hour & when there is More Ridership, such as Change of Shift @ the Hospital, The Morning & Evening Rush, Increase Service. I would Coordinate with Mercy Hospital to Determine the Work Schedule of the Doctors, Nurses, Surgeons, Work Staff so we can Schedule the Shuttle to coordinate with the Work Schedule of the Hospital Staff.
The 2nd Shuttle is the Elmont Flexi Shuttle, which Replaced the N2 Route. The N2 operated between Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream & Floral Park. The Shuttle Serves Green Acres Mall, The Valley Stream LIRR Station, South Valley Stream State Park, Franklin Avenue Hospital, Elmont & Floral Park. It Currently Operates During the Morning & Evening Rush on Weekdays ONLY.
In Order to make it Successful as a 24/7 Shuttle, I offer the Following Proposals. It would operate to/from the Green Acres Mall Whe the Mall is Open. It would serve the Valley Stream LIRR Station 24/7. When the Green Acres Mall is Closed, ALL Shuttle Buses would Begin/Terminate @ the Valley Stream LIRR Station.
I would Extend it from the Current Terminal in Floral Park (Meacham Avenue & Hempstead Turnpike) to either Stewart Manor LIRR Station or New Hyde Park LIRR Station. The Shuttle would continue along Meacham Avenue, which goes into Covert Avenue & take Covert Avenue to Stewart Avenue. The Shuttle would then take Stewart Avenue to New Hyde Park Road.
If You were to have the New Terminal be the Stewaet Manor LIRR Station, the Shuttle would take New Hyde Park Road to Plaza Road, Turn Right on Plaza Road & the Terminal would be by the Underpass @ the Station (So Passengers can Get access to BOTH Westbound & Eastbound Service on the Hempstead Branch). Upon Leaving the Stewart Manor LIRR Station , the Shuttle would take Plaza Road to Jefferson Street, Jefferson Street to Salisbury Avenue, Salisbury Avenue to New Hyde Park Road, New Hyde Park Road to Stewart Avenue, Stewart Avenue to Covert Avenue & the the rest of the Route to Valley Stream LIRR Station (Extended to Green Acress Mall when the Mall is Open).
If You extend the Shuttle to the New Hyde Park LIRR Station, The Shuttle would New Hyde Park Road to Plaza Avenue, Plaza Avenue to Herkomer Street, Herkomer Street to 2nd Avenue. The Terminal would be in Front of the Station House @ the New Hyde Park LIRR Station. Upon Leaving the New Hyde Park LIRR Station, The Shuttle would take 2nd Avenue to New Hyde Park Road, New Hyde Park Road to Stewart Avenue, Stewart Avenue to Covert Avenue & then the Rest of the Route to the Valley Stream LIRR Station (Extended to the Green Acres Mall when the Mall is Open).
The 3rd Shuttle I find Interesting. It is actually 2 Shuttles: 1 Operates during the Morning & Evening Rush & the Other Operates during the Day (Weekdays ONLY). It is Called the Port Washington Shuttle. The One that Operates during the Day operates between the Port Washington & Rosiyn LIRR Stations, even though BOTH of their Terminal Stops are actually 2 Blocks away from the LIRR Stations. There are 4 Trips in the Morning between 8AM & 10AM that start in Port Washington & does a Loop into Roslyn & goes back to Port Washington. There is 1 Trip @ 3PM that Starts @ the Clock Tower in Roslyn & goes to Port Washington. There are 4 Trips in the Afternoon that start in Port Washington, does a Loop in Roslyn & goes back to Port Washington between 3:30PM-5:30PM. The other Shuttle operates between the Port Washington LIRR & the Soundview area of Port Washington. There are 3 Shuttles in the Morning between 6:45AM-7:45AM TO the Port Washington LIRR Station & there are 4 Shuttles between 6PM-7PM FROM the Port Washington LIRR Station.
I LIKE this IDEA. I would like to COMBINE the 2 Shuttles into 1 Connecting the Soundview area of Port Washington with BOTH the Port Washington & Roslyn LIRR Stations. The Idea is that the Shuttle would start in Soundview, go to the Port Washington LIRR Station & then Continue on to the Roslyn LIRR Station instead of 2 Blocks away from the Station & would be a Terminal instead of a Loop. Because YOU are Connecting 2 LIRR Stations, YOU would be able to make this Shuttle a 24/7 Shuttle.
There is 1 other thing I would recommend. Here are the Fare Zones for the LIRR: Penn Station in New York County (Manhattan), Atlantic Terminal in Kings County (Brooklyn), Long Island City & Hunterspoint Avenue in Queens County (Queens) is in Zone 1. Jamaica in Queens County (Queens) is in Zone 3. Port Washington, New Hyde Park, Stewart Manor & Valley Stream are in Zone 4. Roslyn & Rockville Centre are in Zone 7. Currently: Here is the Fare for Monthly Tickets between the Zones.
Zone 1 & Zone 4: $270.00
Zone 1 & Zone 7: $308.00
Zone 3 & Zone 4: $201.00
Zone 3 & Zone 7: $235.00
Maybe if We adjust the Monthly Fares for the Stations I Mentioned in the Blog to Include the Price Monthly Rides on the Respective Shuttles, It would Encourage More Ridership & we could then Change the Shuttle from a Van to a Bus & Increase Service on these 3 Shuttles. MAYBE if We Increase Ridership on these 3 Shuttles, the Mercy Medical Shuttle could be Changed back to the N17 Route, The Elmont Flexi Shuttle could be changed back to the N2 Route & the Port Washington Shuttle could be changed to the N8 Route.
